Sonata for Unaccompanied Violin (1983)

Programme Note: John Buckley

The Sonata for Unaccompanied Violin was commissioned by University College, Cardiff and first performed there by James Barton in November 1983. The work is in three movements, the first of which juxtaposes phrases of contrasting character ranging from lyrically flowing lines to irregular rhythmic fragments. The second movement is in the nature of a scherzo and maintains a forward rhythmic momentum throughout. The final movement concentrates on the development of an extended melodic line often interspersed with dramatic elements. After reaching a climactic point, the movement moves towards a placid and reflective conclusion.
