for Orchestra
A Mirror into the Light draws its title from an image in the poem What We Can See of the Sky Has Fallen by Lavinia Greenlaw. In composing the piece I have attempted to capture something of the brilliance and luminosity of the poetic image.
The piece falls into three sections which are played without a break; the vigorous and energetic opening and closing parts framing a more reflective central episode.
A Mirror into the Light was commissioned by Camerata Ireland with the financial assistance of the Arts Council of Ireland. It was first performed in Stormont Castle in April 1999 by Camerata Ireland conducted by Barry Douglas.
