A Few Notes for Jim (2005)                Programme Note John Buckley

A Few Notes for Jim was composed in memory of James (Jim) Wilson, who died in July 2005. Jim had been my composition teacher, and subsequently a friend and colleague for a period of over thirty years. He made an extraordinary contribution to Irish cultural life through his composition, teaching and promotion of contemporary music.

A Few Notes for Jim for solo violin was written for Darragh Morgan and first played by him in Airfield House, Dundrum, Dublin in November 2005. The piece is virtuosic in style, combining lyricism with more flamboyantly dramatic gestures. I like to think that Jim, who had a great sense of humour, would enjoy the somewhat ironic title.
