Program Notes

endless the white clouds… was commissioned by the 9th International Harp Congress held in Dublin in 2005. The piece was first performed there in July 2005 by Geraldine O’ Doherty to whom it is dedicated. The title is taken from The Chinese Flute, Hans Bethge’s free rendering in German of ancient Chinese poems.

The piece sets out to explore the unique and exquisite sonorities of the harp. From a structural perspective, small motivic fragments emerge, merge, develop and dissolve in a manner suggestive of cumulus clouds.
